Society dictates the acceptability of our actions, but should it not be the other way around, where we determine the acceptability of society or even a hybrid of it? This statement is contradictory, and I intended to impose such question as the contradiction bring out the concept of language. Language is vital in the discussion of society and acceptability as I would say all my readers have their own notion of what is right and wrong- which opens to comments. Each society has their own fashion in which they communicate through language: and by fashion I am implying the mannerism in which one articulates the language that is at his/her disposal, for instance, the term ‘fag’ is used by the British to refer to a cigarette but in North America a ‘fag’ is someone who is homosexual and therefore is used as a derogatory language. Understanding the fashion of language is vital to understand the etiquettes of the society that we are discussion. For my piece I am focusing on the general North American society and how this society uses its language.

Being brought up most of my life in the American society, I have been privileged and yet an elitist due to my social ignorance to problems outside my social structure. Rumor has it that the social structure is the most relevant in the East (developing nations), but let me contradict by saying that the biggest rift in social structure in the West, prominently within the North American nations of USA and Canada; where members from different parts of society fail to recognize others and the rights that the are entitled to. Two matters that I want to focus on the concept of ‘slut’ and ‘fag’ that is used by society. I understand the reasoning of the language in which why the society has implemented these terms, as a ‘slut’ is a person who appeals to the promiscuity factor but alluding to his/her sex appeal and a ‘fag’ is a homosexual male, but what I cannot accept this fashion of language is used as I find it to be degrading. Such degradation imposed by one member society over another allows for the superiority complex in which vast majority turns a blind eye to.

Personally I find that every, single human being is entitled to live a lifestyle suited to his/her own accords without the prosecution imposed by others; and realistically, such a notion is near impossible due to the fact that different subgroups have conflicting accords. These differing conflicts are natural as we are sharing this planet with seven billion other human beings, but what these subgroups have to bear in mind is these different accords came to existence for a reason. I find it unfair to pass judgement by calling someone a ‘fag’ or a ‘slut’ on just their bare appearance and what I find unjust is when the person being called a ‘fag/slut’ not standing up for his/her self. Social injustice exists when there are no defenders of the cause: by defenders, I mean someone who will not allow another person degrade oneself in public [as the discourse of private events cannot be regulated, and it breaches personal freedoms and rights], and if one does not stand up to defend oneself, than we as a society have given over some of our power to create an oppressed society. Oppression leads to tyranny, when one subgroup of people has power over another and it cause inequality.

For democratic societies as Canada and the United States, I find it intriguing at the acceptability of an individual’s action is dictated through the action of the state and/or the Church. For such nations that pride themselves on holding the division between the Church and the State, I am still baffled at the rate in which the Church is able to weasels itself in influencing the acceptability of the actions taken by individuals and therefore causing for the demoralization of those who are homosexual and/or sexually active people of the society. Government and religion, integrated within the society should be there to boost the morals and protect the rights of their citizens from external forces rather than vise-versa; and when the rights of every, single individuals is not protected leads to the individuals to be oppressed. In short, we are the our own enemy when it come to determining the acceptability of our own actions as we are focus much on the bigger picture than standing up for what we really believe: hence, we have become the reason for the misconception within the fashion of our language.

… welcome to the thoughts of sunny :D

… welcome to the thoughts of sunny :D
